At Tradefix Direct we are frequently asked what nail are used for which purpose. We figured we’d start by telling you what our customers commonly buy copper nails for.
What Type Of Copper Nails Exist?
We stock both regular copper clout nails and copper annular ring clout nails. We also carry copper pins, disc rivets and slate straps too. So what are they all used for?
Copper Clout And Annular Ring Nails
Copper clout nails and annular ring clout nails are mostly used for roofing tiles and slates. They come in a range of different sizes as we know that each project is individual. If you search for copper nail usage online it is likely you will land on forums with people discussing why copper nails are the best choice for the job. The most common reasons you’ll likely find are:
- Building regulations do not allow galvanised nails for slate roofing
- Pollution could also damage galvanised nails
- Copper nails are easier to pull out when replacing a broken slate
- Galvanised nails can lose their protection when hammering the nail in
- Galvanised nails may corrode faster which could lead to slates slipping off the roof
In a recent study carried out by Yvens Decroupet, copper nails can last for as much as 40 years depending on the atmosphere. Non polluted areas with average rainfall, low relative humidity, at least 20km from the coast have a higher life expectancy. In areas of high humidity, high rainfall and coastal regions it is advised that Stainless Steel nails be used.
Copper Pins
We sell coppered hardboard pins that are ideal for decorative beading and craft-work applications. At 20mm they are a great size, and being coppered they can also have a long life. Unlike copper nails, coppered hardboard pins are designed to be used in interiors.
Copper Disc Rivets
Copper disc rivets are used for roofing purposes however. The most common reason for purchase is for use with fibre cement slates. Some forum members will tell you that fibre cement slates are much easier to fix than traditional slates because they are man-made and manufactured to uniform dimensions. Natural slates are usually inconsistent in thickness and size which can take longer to sort.
Copper Slate Straps
These are used in roofing applications too. Copper slate straps are frequently used by those who have damaged slates on their roofs but are unable to easily remove the slate. The slate straps provide extra security for those damaged slates.
